Caney Fork Scuds?

When I started fishing the Caney Fork a couple years ago, my go to fly was a Bass Pro Shops scud...a nice size 16 or 18 w/ a couple tufts of hair coming out near the eye for antennae and a couple near the bend for a tail...and it had some krystal flash to add a little spice to it...the fish loved it!!!

Since then though, I've tried tying my own variations and have not had good results at all. In fact, I don't even tie a scud on anymore. I don't own a digital camera, so I can't show what my scuds look like, but I'm wondering what some of you guys tie...

I also have BPS Scuds. I don't remember if they have any flash, but I do remember two tufts near the eyelet and a "tail" of sorts. They're basically like fuzzy midges.

Hook: Tiemco 2457 14 - 18
Tail: Woodduck or Dun Hackle Fibers
Back: 1/8" Scudback material (clear)
Underbody: Ostrich Herl (Grey, Orange, Tan, Olive)
Rib: 7X tippet

Travis, how does that pattern hold up? I've been meaning to tie some of those up but have wondered if it holds together well after a couple fish...

Flynut, I tie a small hare's ear scud that does well on the Caney during certain times of the year.

Hook: TMC 2487 #18-#20
Thread: Gray or Tan 8/0 UNI-Thread
Tail (Optional): Mallard Flank
Body: natural Hare's Mask dubbing mixed with a very small amount of crystal Simi Seal dubbing.

Small gold beadhead is optional but recommended... This pattern is simple yet very buggy looking but doesn't specifically look like much of anything. I normally tie it without a rib or shellback but if you want to add one it does clean up the fly nicely...

I haven't had any issues with it tearing up. I have fished it for years on the Clinch, but most of my fish don't have teeth the size your fish do....

Thanks for the tips guys. I like the way that ostrich herl looks compared to the dubbing that I have used and teased out of the bottom...Is there a reason that you use 7x for the ribbing instead of a fine silver wire?

I have used both before, and typically use silver wire on my larger scuds. I just feel that I can be more precise with the 7X and wiggle my way around the ostrich herl fibers more easily.

Try a Ray Charles for a scud imitation. Easy and quick to tie. Which is a good thing as you know because I'm always getting them hung up and broken off. I had a guide show me one on the Bighorn a few years back and I have just about quit using scud dubbing. When I ask him about the name he said it was such a good fly even a blind man could catch fish on it.The TMC 2457 is a good hook but I like the newer 2488H, it has a little more room in the hook gap. I use pink ostrich herl with flashaboo as the shellback. Grey and olive are good colors as well. Because just like most other crustaceans they change colors when they molt their exoskeleton.

Another good choice is the Ronnie Milsap...........................white ostrich herl and pearl flashaboo

The Ray Charles is an awesome pattern. I was introduced to it earlier this year by a friend and have since had great success with it. This fly imitates both a sow bug and a scud. It is extremely easy to tie. I tie mine on a standard nymph hook in size 18. I do have a problem with their durability though. the mylar back tends to break.

I tried so hard to find a video of Borat, but this will have to do.
