The One that got away

I do a lot of shallow water sight fishing and I have caught quiet a few fish that have gotten away from these winged fishermen (or at least that is what I assume got him). Many of them have fresh wounds, but this one looks like it happened a while back. This fish was 12-14". Take heart in knowing that even the birds lose a few.

Interesting photo for sure! I fished the SoHo Monday, and caught a brown about ten inches long. He had similar markings in the same place as your photo. They were not as deep. I could see three great blue herons working the same water I was fishing.

About two years ago, I was fishing the Cumberland River. I filmed a great blue heron on a log near the water. He was on a solid point. He dove in the water and came out with a ten inch stocker rainbow. He held the fish by the center of it's body. He carried the fish up on the bank a short distance and let it go. I think the trout was stunned. As the fish started to flop on the bank, the heron used his daggerlike bill to stab the fish. That one didn't get away.

Mtn Mike a couple years ago I caught a brown in the park it was a nice fish about 16" long and its spine was exposed for about 2" and you could slide tour hemostats under it. THe fish had totally healed, I hope I can find the pic and I will post. It looks really creepy,but goes to show how hardy these fish can be.
