Question Smallmouth Advice ????

Hey Folks, Been fly fishing the tailh2o's for 6/7 years with pretty good success and since the schedules don't cooperate as well for wading in the summer, I was thinking of starting to hit some of these east TN rivers(Powell & Clinch) for smallmouth. I can use any advice I can get. I use a 5 wt 9' Sage Z-Axis rod and I fish with nymphs below indiactors. Will anything work on dead drifting for smallies? Or do I need to concentrate on floating stuff like poppers, etc.....? Any advise will be appreciated.

I have spent a vast amount of time on both the freestone rivers you mention and have tried many different ways to catch fish on nymphs to make it easier on clients. However, nothing has worked with much consistency. We do our best on assorted streamers and at times poppers.

Both of those rivers are long drainages with some stretches being really good and some being horrible depending on several factors.

If you wish to catch alot of fish and have consistent success then stick with streamers and occasionally poppers.

Default Flies for SM

Below are 3 flies that have been very good for SM. When you tie the Mallard Flank Minnow, use red thread intead for a little color. Also, if you can get Chartreuse mallrd flank, go for it. They love that color. I fish it across current like Kelly Gallop teaches. The mud bug is great for tossing upstream and dragging/hopping it back. It accounted for my largest river SM ever. The Murdich Minnow will float at first and then be just subsurface. Let me know if you try any of these.

To Miss Nancy - she hated fishing, but loved a fisherman.
