Foam Hopper

I'm looking for a foam hopper pattern that will work in the park.

Tom--Any particular reason you are set on a foam hopper? Joe's hopper patterns work well, but the most common 'hopper in the Park is a greyish-green one I've never seen well imitated in commercially available flies. A good buddy of mine, Marty Maxwell, ties an excellent replication which I've called a MarMac Hopper. I don't remember much about the "recipe" except that the wings are turkey feather. Jim Casada

No real reason for foam. Just looking for something that will work well in the park. After looking at some of the hopper recipe's and being a new tyer I may just buy what I find is best.

Tom, I love fishing foam hoppers! Well, actually hoppers in general. They tend to be very floaty (enabling me to fish a bead head dropper a bit deeper than I normally would) and easy to see on the water (I wish I had better vision!).

I've caught a ton of fish this summer on a pattern that Umpqua makes that is simply called "Foam Hopper." Check out this link:

You can always pick a couple hoppers up at LRO and deconstruct them to figure out how they are made. If you can't make it out to LRO, my buddy Kevin over at Rolf Lanz next to West Town Mall carries Umpqua hoppers.

There are several good ones in the links already given. I am currently doing a step by step tutorial of the Improved Chaos Hopper for the LRO Journal. It's a good one, easy to tie, and it will catch fish. Sign up for the LRO Journal if you haven't already

Tim Doyle ties some great terrestrial patterns for the park. Foam bees, ants and small hopper type imitations. He showed me a really nice Chernobyl ant/hopper pattern yesterday. Next time he's tying during this winter get him to show you some of them.

Personally, I like rubber legged stimis and small turks tarantulas as a hopper pattern.
