I am curious as to why they didn't look in that area right away since it was on his trip and one of the most rugged areas of the Park. |

Anyone have any more info on why the lost hiker could not get out on his own? The local news showed him and he was walking well and smiling and appeared to be in perfect health. the news report was vague on why he could not get out except to say he got lost. Just seems odd for an experience hiker.

he was on a ledge near the top of porter mtn and could not go up or down safely....he was about a mile east of the dry sluice manway and had become lost. he followed his own advice and stayed put and waited for help. this area is very difficult, steep, and remote and the manway is marked by cairns (stay to the left of them) and it is easy to become disoriented up there.

The first time I went up that route we got too far to the right. We came out on a rocky spur hundreds of yards to the right of Dry Sluice Gap Trail. That section was SUPER rugged. It appears he was even further to the right then we were. Our group of four was young, in shape, and had rope to deal with extra tricky sections.
The next time I went up we stayed further left and came out right at Dry Sluce Gap Trail. It is much easier if you stay left!

Going up the dry sluice Porters Mountain is on the left which is where he wound up so it looks like he was left of the Cairns, way left, or am I reading it wrong?

I guess I read the reports that described the terrain and assumed his location. The News Sentinal reported him to be on Porter's Mountain which would have been far, far, far left!

he was, as they say of a missed field goal, wide left.
