Unhappy AuSable river loss

For those of you that have fished the AuSable River in Grayling, MI, I am sorry to inform you that Rusty Gates, owner, flyfisher and the greatest supporter of the river system has passed. Rusty fought a tough battle with cancer. I last saw him in Aug 09 and once again, he helped a couple of my friends accomplish the goals for their firat AuSable trip. He, over the last many years has fought to protect the AuSable River system against many issues, mainly programs that would destroy or jeapordise this great river. My first trout fishing trip was to his lodge and the AuSable. He would always provde you with needed advice on how, where, when to fish the rivers. Also what flies to use. I have fished his rivers for 20 or 21 years. He will be missed.

Been to Rusty's lodge many times over the years. The Au Sable and the Park are my two fly fishing destination. He ran a great operation up there and was really dedicated to the River amd the fishing. I hope they keep the Lodge open. I bet Rusty would want it that way.

Last year was my first experience of the AuSable and Gates Lodge. Enjoyed them tremendously. Rusty certainly was one of the good guys!! Extremely knowledgeable about the area and the river he sought so hard to preserve. A cuppa joe and some helpful hints - and he even made me a catcher of AuSable trout.

May God be with Julie and the other members of his family!
