For Six days and 5 nights my normal back country trips I used to think just like Birdman and the Boy Scouts.
"Be Prepared for Anything" meaning that my pack weighted in around 45 Plus pounds. Today I think more like "A Country Boy can Survive" and around 40 is a lot better. ![]() |

True, true... unfortunately, whiskey is pretty heavy!

The whiskey may be heavy but lightening the load is a lot of good work...

I can't get my pack under 40 pounds and I've got some good lightweight gear...
My problem is that I'm always prepared for way more than necessary...![]()

I would love to have some nice gear, but those days are gone, me thinks. My MSR stove still works thank goodness and I still have a nice Kelty pack. I do regret letting my little cousin have my Kelty 3 season for Boy Scouts.

I have no idea how much my first pack weighed on my initial excursion into the BC....cheap 2 man tent and a borrowed llbean down bag...high tech fibers were scarce and not a lot of wool worn in Fla...only interest was not having to hike in and out every day to fish in the same locale....probably took way too many creature comforts...have packed in several times with my son who always claimed to be able to carry more than he could....big mistake on my part...did do an overnight trip once with nothing more than a ground cover, a sweat suit and a thin sleep closed foam pad...all was fine until the temps dropped way below the comfort zone....
