Do you have other pictures of this fish? Particularly showing it's tail? I have fished the obed river and caught smallies there myself but that fish really resembles a redeye with the blue cheeks and the distinct mark behind the eye. I wasn't aware that they were that far North though. The fins including their tail (most notable) will have white tips. I'm just curious. Here is a pic of a redeye:



Edit: After some research,it appears that the redeye bass was introduced into several drainages in TN, including the Obed, during the 50's and they have since hybridized with the smallmouth bass. Electro shocking has turned up pure strain Smallmouth and Redeye as well as the hybrid.

I know there are redeye in that drainage because I have caught them on Daddy's Creek before. This fish may have been a hybrid because its body had the shape of a smallmouth...not quite as chunky as the redeye I've caught before. Although, the one in the picture you posted wasn't nearly as stubby as the ones I've caught so maybe it was a pure redeye...?
