I thought that I'd share a few of the photographs from our first grouse hunting trip of the year. Hazel and I had a couple of days that were a little too hot for grouse hunting but the rest of the trip was fantastic.
I had planned on leaving in time to ensure that Hazel and I would arrive at our destination in time for a quick evening hunt. Of course, I let her out to use the restroom and she was ambushed by a skunk in the garden. ![]() I did a bit of fancy driving and we still made it before dark but I can't handle the hours behind the wheel like I used to. We opted for a quick little photo shoot by the lake. ![]() Someone was a little upset that we didn't hunt. ![]() We got a bit of a late start the first morning. Coming out of the box Hazel was on high alert. ![]() Beautiful country. ![]() First hunt of the day and we were in the grouse. ![]()

Like I said, beautiful place.
![]() ![]() We found brown phase grouse... ![]() and we found grey phase grouse... ![]() and we found grouse that like to run... ![]() and a few that Hazel was able to nail down till I could get there... ![]() Our best day was on Columbus Day. We moved a few birds before lunch but were not able to put any in the old game bag. After lunch was a different story. We managed a limit of ruffed grouse (5) and a single woodcock in around 4 hours. 4 of the 5 grouse were taken over rock solid points. Not to shabby for a dog that will be 2 in December. Thanks for looking. Someone needs to call and tell the pheasant that we will be on their doorstep in 29 days. P.S. PA, I have not forgotten about getting you those feathers they will be in the mail in a couple days.

Beautiful dog and great pictures. My brother hunts with a german shorthair named Oscar and I think he is almost 3. I need to get out and see my brother and his dog. It looks like a lot of fun.

Man,
That is a beautiful place! Your dog is a beauty too! Is that some kind of tracker on its neck? Do you tie flies with those feathers? *Great pics and thanks for sharing!

Cool, man. I did not know you grouse hunted, your screen name does not hint at it or anything.

She is wearing a beeper collar. The woods are pretty thick and the beeper collar lets me know where she is at and if she is on point. It also helps to keep the wolves away. There will be some flies tied with those feathers.

GM77 --- excellent pics, exceptional looking canine friend, and great success on your grousehunt! Terrain looks much easier to navigate than the Clinch Mtn where I used to trek for 'em. BTW, both gray and brown-phase feathers are excellent for soft hackles and nymph beards as you probably already know.
