I have fished it and it was pretty good but laughably crowded when I went. The fish were decent sized, and I put their redeye up against any redeye in the country in terms of size. It was a good experience, and glad to check it off the list. However, there is absolutely no reason to leave this area to pursue river smallmouth, unless you just want a change of scenery, and a lot of company.

I am actually alot closer to the boone area, than the smoky's. I make a few trips a year to fish top water poppers. It's alot of fun when the water is clear enough to wade.

You go up and fish the New, you won't be disappointed. A good number of 4-5 pounders come fromt he stretch around I-77 each year and the crowds are thin on weekedays.
