usually one of the first flies anyone ties in a class is the wooly worm. Basically a wooly bugger without a tail.

Horse hair nymph wouldn't be bad as a drowned caterpillar

I know about the green weenie! I was looking at a couple of other patterns that float. I was modifying a Kevin's caterpillar from the Davidson Rivers Outfitters. Have any of ya'll fished it? Smoke if you would answer your cotten picking phone I would tell you what I am up to. Ky, where in the world did you find a catalpa worm pattern? I used to tear the bream up on live ones in my youth!

Try www.flytyingforum.com and do a search for caterpillar. You should have a good selection.
