Don Kirk's book, Smoky Mountains Trout Fishing Guide, says it was on the Middle Prong of the Little River; page 31 of the 1997 edition. Twelve and a half pounds in July, 1980. FWIW, the first time I fished it aobut 15 years ago I scored 5 rainbows, 4 brown trout, 2 brook trout- a Grand Slam! Going to try again this year.

The bottom of this page shows at 15.5 lb. brown taken from catalooche creek. I was told a few years ago that the biggest trout caught in the park was a brown from Deep Creek in the late 60's. |

Checked Kirk's book to see if I missed something. He only mentions the one brown from the Middle Prong. Either way, those are some big honkers! Grannyknot, I checked your nps link- interesting info.

I was intrigued by this thread and started to read Kirk's book in anticipation of visiting the park some this year. The 12-1/2 pound brown trout was the largest in the Middle Prong. I found in his book that he mentions on page 26, a 16 pound brown trout taken from the East Prong of the Little River in 1979.

That must be the one caught in the big swimming hole below the campground. I've heard a little about that one. There's a huge Brown mounted in the SMA in G-burg that I'm sure the owner told me came from East Prong LR.

After reading this post I used the Search engine to bring up the original thread that I had started about a conversation that I had exactly one year ago today. Follow the link and you will see a picture of the fish and how it happened to be caught. I hope you enjoy it.
Hugh http:// Very Interesting conversation!!! ( 1 2 3) That link did not work. You can go back one year and find it. |
