orvis sling pack

thinking of getting the orvis sling pack instead of a vest or chest pack, anyone using one?

At one time or another, I think I've owned about every type vest and pack known to man...and never been completely happy. I hate a vest. They make my neck sore and the pockets are always in the wrong places and in the way for my tastes. Plus, I'm trying to be a bit of a minimialist as well, so I dont want something big. Chest packs are horrible for me. Something sticking out on my chest, to block the view of my footsteps while wading/climbing steep-gradient mountain streams is a disaster waiting to happen. Fanny packs, while I used them for awhile, constantly sagging, is a pain. Then not longh ago a fishing buddy recommended a pack to me and after several full-day trips with it, I have finally found the best fishing pack/bag I've had to date. And it's not even a "fishing" pack. It's a tactical sling pack.

It carries all I need for a full day on the water, is very well made, has a comfortable shoulder strap, has molle-type webbing in very strategic places to hang zingers and such, is vented on the back side to keep cool, and slings around on your back, completely out of the way while fishing. Easily slides around to the front when you need something out of it. The only downside I've found is when you bend over, it tends to want to slide around to the front, but a caribiner clipped to your belt stops that, and it even has a loop on the back to accomidate one if that bothers you (which it dont bother me enough to do that).

If this pack had a name on it like Fishpond or WJ or the like, it would be a $100+ pack. But it's a tactical pack, and I bought mine for around $34...shipping included.

Orvis sling pack Weird I tried one on just couldn't get the drift of it .it seamed to be all wrong. so I bought a Patagonia direct and I hate it. decided that a sling was not for me. so I have a Patagonia sling used for 4 hr. for sale. went back to my Simms waist pack. I have 3 more waist ,a new vest un used. keep going back to the Simms water proof so I will stay and be happy.

I have a fishpond chest/fanny pack which I use most of the time and like it a lot.

I also have an orvis chest with a back pack attached that I like alot as well but it has been put on the shelf for long day trips, where I may want to bring a luck or change of shoes/socks which I have not had the opportunity to do in awhile. If they would make one where the back compartment could be buckled on or off depending on your needs, that would be the ticket.

I have had both orvis & WJ.The new orvis looks great .Mine was the old model it carries all i wanted but had no place to carry a water bottle. The WJ did. It is also larger than the orvis. What I didnt like about both is all your gear is piled in the bottom no seperation. Try the orvis if you dont like it send it back.

I really am a nubbie to trout ,spend most of my fishing days in salt,
maybe minimalistic would be better, shirt pocket for fly box and a neck lanyard for tippet and basic tools. Anyone using this system?

I'm a cheapskate. I use about a foot of old fly line tied to one of the D-rings on my waders to carry my fly box, tippet, and dry fly floatant. Then I use my pocket for my nail clippers and strike indicator, and of course my phone for taking pictures.

I tend to be minimalistic also. I wear a lanyard with tippet and basic tools and a couple a small flyboxes in shirt pockets for mtn fishing. If hiking any distance, I wear a small waistpack with a water bottle and a snack. For warmwater wading I have a small vertical chest/over shoulder pack big enough for a couple of fly boxes for poppers and streamers and tippet.
You might want to check out a vertical thin chestpack like the new Orvis one or the fishpond san juan pack.

It really just depends on when and where. Some days I just use a lanyard and some days call for a full blown boat bag. More often than not, you will find me wearing a fishpond blue river chest/lumbar pack. It can be slung around the shoulder or worn as a waist pack. Also improvises as a wading belt if that's important.

If a bottle holder is important to you then I would check out the Dragonfly Guide LTE which is new for this year.

I generally despise a vest, but I have a Gore Range Tech pack on the way.
