Default Clinch Update Sept 20th

For the past few months I have heard many reports about how much of a negative impact the stripers are having on the trout population on the Clinch. I thought it seemed logical because the last few trips I have made to the Clinch resulted in low catch rates. However, deer season opens next weekend, so if I didn't make it out this week it could be a while before I return.

I got a late start to the morning after sleeping in, but was surprised to find the river virtually empty when I arrived at 9:30. I took my time getting ready, and worked my way downstream to one of my favorite runs. I saw some little brown caddis hatching, and it wasn't long before I was into fish. In fact, the fish were so active I landed 6 rainbows in my first 20 minutes (almost 20 casts as well).

Ended the morning catching 10 rainbows in almost exactly two hours of fishing time. All but one were in the 10 - 12" range. Don't want to overload the forum with little details, but if you are interested please clink my blog link below for the full report.

Kinda makes me have second thoughts about hunting next weekend..... gotta keep my options open!

Nice fish. After I text you the pictures of the deer (plural) I kill next weekend, you'll wish you went deer hunting

The striper paranoia was laughable to a degree this year. Sure there were stripers but were there anymore than normal? Doubt it from what I saw.

I fished my last day on the Clinch until 2015 a week ago, and overall I'd say this was one of the best years for quality fish I've seen in the river. The slot is certainly working, although I do worry about the lack of smaller fish in the population. I also saw more fry than I've ever seen so that bodes well for future years. Sulfurs still hatching which is just amazing as well.

I was stunned every trip at the lack of fisherman this year, as I rarely fished within sight of another angler.
