Default Clinch-Saturday Feb 22, 2013

Ok, let me start by saying if you are looking for big fish pictures turn away now and turn on the Nature channel. Saturday on the Clinch was jammed with a weird available wading time of 2pm to 7pm, so it was warm, sunny and looked like opening day on a northern stream with people jockeying for position in their favorite hole. I managed to get two browns on soft hackle, they were small, colored nicely but looked winter thin to me. No complaints though beautiful day, two fish, big fun, on a side note about 5pm saw a guy 20 yards below me fall under the water about mid thigh deep, actually fell twice I think he could not get his feet under him wearing boot waders not sure if rubber or felt bottom. After checking to make sure he was ok, asked him if he had dry clothes in car and he said no, of course told him to get out and go right away and turn on the heater. We were less than a 1/4 mile from ramp but had to have been a cold walk, in winter or anytime. Please carry extra clothes in your ride, Byron talks about it all the time on his reports, when you see it happen it drives the point home.

Sunday hit the Smokies but kinda slow with the high water and fast flow, looks like Ducky did ok in the higher elevation, hats off to him!

Hats off to you as well

Most just stay home

And that's two more fish than I caught at the Clinch last time.

Keep the posts coming

Big Sur, agree with Ducky on this post. Very tough fishing conditions as of late. I feel that honing our skills now, will pay dividends shortly when conditions do go well. Tough river that I am committed to figuring out. Thank you for the post on a tough day.

Glad to see you got out and had a fun day.

The fish have been slow on the Clinch. I think it is a combination of the short fishing windows and limited macro hatch or the lack of...

Anyhow; we have been targeting the deeper holes with big heavy nymphs on a 4-5' drop. Hope that helps...

Bigsur, I hate I missed you Saturday! It was my first time to hit the river this year and you would have thought it was my first time with a fly rod in my hand.

I ended up leaving after a few hours. It was a frustrating afternoon for me. I spent more time hung up in trees, rocks, and whatever else I could snag. I just simply dropped two flies in the water trying to tie them on and my knots sucked. I could not seem to find an area that was not loaded with fisherman or became overloaded. With all of that said, I was so happy to finally get to the river. Hopefully I worked out all of the rust so bring on spring time!

You caught a few under tough conditions. You'll be ready when things warm up.
