Talking First Brookies of the Year

Last weekend was a whirlwind with the Nation Paddling Film Festival and finishing out the weekend fishing the Smokies with NDuncan

I'm sure Nathan and I aren't the only ones who have been tracking the water temps in the Smokies. Finally the dip from the melting snow was gone and temps were starting to skyrocket. Talk of Quill Gordons did sell out LRO, but the bugs just didn't seem to be there Yet

Since I didn't make it home to 1:30 AM the night before, Nathan offered to drive and pick me up which was greatly appreciated. When he texted me on Friday about fishing I thought the streams would be dropping out, but with all the recent rain and no leaf activity the rivers were holding really well. I was thinking I made a mistake to fish, and probably should have just gone boating, but it was a most beautiful day, so worst case scenario we would have a good hike. I always try to go in with low expectations as this time of year can really be hit or miss and hoped I would just catch one

We hiked in and we both quickly realized Winter had gotten the better of us and the hike was harder than usual. I guess I now know how Mac must feel

I realized I forgot my thermometer, nut Nathan had us covered. Unfortunately 44 was all we were going to get, nothing like the 50 it would hit downstream. I fished the first nice pool and thought I maybe saw a tiny one rise but wasn't sure. Nathan bagged his first fish a couple minutes later

I began fishing pretty hard with no success and went through 5 flies in the next 10 minutes. Double nymph get messed up much more than dry dropper.

We decided after Nathan got one it was time to hike up

A place that seems so closed in most months I spend there is so open this time of year.

We didn't want to go too high and soon hit the water. After diligently working all the water I could I was finally rewarded with my first Brookie of the year.

And the head shot since I didn't know if it would be my only fish.

It felt so nice to be back on the stream

I broke off again which let me to finding a super successful combo. Cone head pink weenie with reg pink weenie dropper. It was like turning the lights on

Great way to start out the fishing year in the Smokies

And Breck if I thought ahead of time it would have been a double digit day, I would have invited you. I promise to pay you back soon

Great trip and pictures! Good to see the fish getting hungry and aggressive.

I can imagine 5:00 came too fast. What a great outing. With a high of only 11 degrees today all I can do is look at your pictures and drool. Thanks for sharing and reminding me spring will get here someday.
