Post Park announces controversial new program

Just got this press release this morning. I'm pretty shocked as I didn't hear about it previously. I guess 15 inch Brookies may be in my future

Park Announces Plan to Restore Native Brook Trout to all Park Waters by Eradicating all Rainbow and Brown Trout

The brook trout is the only trout species native to the Smokies, although non-native brown and rainbow trout have been introduced into the park and today are found in most large streams below 3,000 feet. Brook trout have lost approximately 75% of their native range in the park since the early 1900s mostly due to logging and the introduction of non-native rainbow trout. The non-native rainbow trout out-compete native brook trout by producing more offspring, growing at faster rates, and occupying stream habitat once occupied by brook trout. Today, brook trout are only found in about 133 miles of park streams. Restoration efforts have restored brook trout back to 14.6 miles of their native range since 1986 and continue today with new plans to remove ALL Rainbow and Brown trout from Park Waters by use of Antimycin. Officials at Great Smoky Mountains National Park announced that while this plan will prove somewhat controversial, it is what is necessary to the parks mission of restoring the park to its natural state before the impact oflogging.

All park employees essential for trout removal operations and law enforcement staff should report to duty as regularly scheduled. All other employees should report for duty at 10:00 a.m. or take appropriate leave.
For more information please visit the Park’s website at www.nps.gov/grsm and or call the Park’s Fish and Weather Information Line at 865-436-1200.

Have to say, I knew from the caption that this was going to be a joke, but well done.

Funny post. You had me going until I got to the part about antimycin.

It was easy to believe at first because I had a ranger talk to my dad, brother and myself last year and ask why we didn't keep the rainbows we caught. She said the park was actively encouraging the harvest of non-natives. Haven't thought of that conversation until I opened this thread.

Thanks for the humor.

Sometimes we get too serious here on the forum.
