Best rod length for fishing in the Smokies

Hello again all. *My previous poll showed the overwhelming majority of folks prefer a 4 weight rod for fly fishing in the park. *Now let's see what everyone thinks is the best rod length for. *i realize that a lot of you have more than one rod and chose which weight/length to use depending on where ou will be fishing that day. *Consider this poll as if you had to pick one length for a 4 weight rod to use in the park. *I look forward to seeing the results and discussion.

I think that you are going to find that a preferred length is highly personal. My favorite rod is an 8 foot rod that is really sweet. It is a slower action rod that is a lot of fun to fish. However, I use a 9 foot rod often, especially when throwing nymphs. More often than not, the extra reach is useful. I voted for an 8 1/2 foot rod because it is a good compromise between the 2 rods I fish. I would probably say that if I had to choose a rod and had any doubt, I would go longer.

Have to go with 8'6". Long enough for high sticking but not too long for most canopies. In the Park, I primarily fish a 8'6" 4wt 4 piece TFO Pro series. I love that rod for the Park. Not great for streamers, but I only throw them after a real good rain. I'll use a 9' 5wt. Sage for that. Back to the TFO - if the need arises for something shorter than 8'6", I just break it down and fish with what sections I need. Good weight and length for dry/dropper, double nymph, or plain old dry fly fishing, my favorite (if they're hitting). I was suprised with the extra freedom felt while casting a rod only 6" shorter than what I was used to. This length in the Park seems to be very user friendly. Thanks for a good topic.
