Default Infrared Thermometer

Anyone use one of these? I saw William Joseph just introduced one. How close to the water do you have to be to be effective?

Thanks,

I looked into buying an infrared thermometer from a medical equipment supply house. I take the water temperature at the "Y" almost every day. I felt it would make it easier for me because I wouldn't have to climb down the bank. They were expensive but over time it would save me a lot of it and lessen the likelyhood of an accident in the winter. What I found though is that the accuracy stated by the manufacturer was + or - 3 degrees. The digital that I use now and dip in the water is dead on. So I decided not to buy the infrared. Look at the accuracy before you buy. The one I looked at was around $200 but 3 degrees wasn't close enough for my use.

Byron,

Thanks. Digital makes sense to me. I have a hard time figuring out how long to swish that thing around, and then an even harder time figuring out what temperature that red stuff is really at. Do they make large size readouts? The WJ is $39.00, but didn't have any accuracy info.
Anything you might know?

Thanks,

Byron and justfishing,

I just happened to be looking through a MRFC catalog and found the William Joseph Infrared Thermometer. The claim is that for each foot from the target, why not just say water, you lose 2% accuracy. I suppose you would have to decide how close to the water you want to be to take the reading and adjust accordingly.
