Looking into buying a new rod and am interested in the new Winston Ascent 9' 4 wt for the tailwaters. Has anybody out there purchased one of these yet, or know anything about them? My other option is a sage launch.

Might need a bigger stick for tail waters. I personely go no lighther then a 6wt. There some pretty big fish out there

A lot of tailwater fishing is small flies and fine tippets, which to me calls for a lighter rod, a #4 or a #5. I do like a 9' length. I don't think the size of the fish matters so much as the size of the flies/tippet.
A #6 is useful for streamers and big weighted nymphs though. sb

Steve,
I share your approach exactly. I currently use an 8' 4 wt for the tailwaters, but I have a 9' 6 wt that I use for streamers and the occassional warm water fishery. I just feel that having the extra foot of length may help me reach out there a little farther with my casting, and I have heard really good things about Winston rods. Travis |
