Pheasant Tail Nymph

I need step by step guidance on how to tie a Pheasant Tail Nymph plus a materials list, and size hooks.

I like to tying mine on a 2457 tiemco hook. But most tie it on a wet/dry fly hook....Mustad 94840......Mustad hooks are cheaper and usually come 50 to a pack as apposed to Tiemco....Sizes ranging from 12 to 18.....14,16, and 18 common for the park. I like my (Copper) bead head oversized and depending on what size you'll be tying just refer to the pack's there. IE; for a size 14 hook I use the bead head that works on size 12, 14, and size 16 hooks!

Materials list; Dark olive thread, small/fine copper wire, olive pheasant tail, and strung peacock hurl.

1) bead on hook

2) whip in thread

3) whip in copper wire just behind bead

4) thread down just past the bend of the hook

5) grab 4 to 5 strands of pheasant tail fibers whip in

6) wind pheasant tail 2/3 up the shank and tie off

7) wind copper wire 2/3 up the shank and tie off

8.) whip in an additional 5 strands of pheasant tail (Short!!) for the wing case and leave until you have put on peacock hurl. These fibers need to be short enought to come to the bead and be swept back for the legs! I've found tying this way eliminates a step. Takes a lil practice!

9) whip in peacock hurl, wind to the bead and tie off

10) take pheasant tail fibers from step 8, bring them just behind the bead and tie off

11) Sweep the ends of the pheasant tail fibers back making your legs and wind thread over top the fibers so they sweep back in the opposite direction!

12) Go fish!

There are several different ways to actually tie the fly. I kinda like the way Skip Morris does it. There is a size range and material list included.

I like to add some flash to the wing pad or legs sometimes.
