Default Walking Middle Prong 01/26/08

Just walked Middle Prong this afternoon after the fly tying demo. In case you need a reminder what pretty streams we have in the Smokies:

Just off the bridge above the parking lot. Still plenty of ice on the rocks.

The cascades - with water again.

Middle Prong just below the Panther Creek trailhead. Just gorgeous.

Thanks for sharing the pictures! I haven't been up there in way too long and that brought back memories of some great days on the water...

Default Hey Barbara

Barbara,

I a ready to tie up your "Yellow Thingys". I need to know where to send them so send me a message at donw@gottaflyfish.com, and I will try to "get er done" by next weekend.

I am going to LRO next weekend so I will get my mountain fix.

Default yellow thingeys

Don,

Had trouble getting the email to go through. Check and see if the last one made it. Can't wait to see your new creation. Even better, to try it out. Pray for some decent weather that lasts more than one day! Thanks.

Barbar

Default 2-2-08 on the Middle Prong Trail

Charlie, Your pictures from last week got me up off the couch yesterday and I hiked up along Lynn Camp Prong. The stream was still rolling from the gullywasher we got two nights previous. I would have liked to have seen it 24 hrs earlier. Middle Prong was flowing very strong. In fact, there were about a dozen kayakers all along the upper part of the stream on the dirt road. It looks like it would be fun (but really cold...)

Anyway, here are a few pictures:
The cascades viewed from the trail:

The lower cascade, up close. You can't see it in the picture but there was a lot of spray in the air:

The stream farther above:

Some more nice whitewater:

Pete,

Great pictures. I came close to going up there myself yesterday. I've walked up that trail a couple of times in the last two weeks but have never gone above the Panther Creek trailhead. Any idea how much farther up it is before Panther Creek dumps into Lynn Camp?

Default Panther Creek

Charlie, actually I think Panther creek enters Lynn Camp Prong, before the Panther Creek TH. Take a look at the topo for that area:

The stream crossing for the Panther Creek trail is obviously a wet one. It looked pretty close to impassable yesterday.

I'm not sure how fishy the stream is. My guess is that there are lots of little rainbows. I think you were asking about Panther creek in another thread, and I'm not sure if you know it or not, but there is another Panther Creek that is closer to the mouth of Abrams Creek, by the lake.

Pete,

I was thinking that the previous reference had something to do with Abrams so you're probably right on this one. Thanks.
