]I just finished my first hand planed split bamboo fly rod. The rod is a 7' 4wt made on a modified Garrison taper. It has been a very memorable and enjoyable experience. I can't wait to take it fishing. (maybe this weekend)

That's great and i'm sure it will be something that you hold special for a long time to come. I would love to do something like that one day but time is the big problem as i'm sure it is for most people. How long did it take you to learn how to build a rod?

Here are some more pics. Hope they are better and show more detail. The digital camera is not that great nor is the operator.
I began the rod the week before Christmas and have worked on it weekends, evenings and any other time I could get a spare minute. I was taught how to make the rod by Stan Smartt, A master rod maker and a true friend. I only started fly fishing in the spring of 2007, but am hooked and having the time of my life. Making the rod taught me a lot about myself. It was truly a wonderful experience. I am already thinking about the next rod. Probably is going to be a large water rod. DWT,
Nice work! This summer I built a graphite rod, and I loved the entire process. I can only imagine that building a bamboo rod would be that much fun, and more. What types of tools would I need in order to build a cane rod? How much money would it take to get started? I already have a nice flexcoat wrapper and a dryer. Could I use this for cane work? Thanks, Grousegunner |

Nice job, did you flame it or is that a varnish finish?
