It was always a quiet time in Townsend until Fly Tyers Weekend came about. The leaves have usually fallen off the trees and the tourists are gone. But the fly anglers will be there. We held this event the first time in 2004. We had arranged for twenty fly tyers to meet here for a weekend and demonstrate their skills to a large audience. It was an assembly of many professional guides, fly tying experts, demonstrators and avid anglers. We rented a tent to put up behind the store that was heated and attached to the store. It served as an extra demonstration room. We had five or six fly tyers tying at one time so people could move from table to table watching who they wanted to. It was a huge success. Hundreds of people came.

We planned the event for the same weekend, (first weekend in November) in 2005. We knew, based on the year before that we had to have parking for at least 150 cars and serve food so participants didn’t have to leave for lunch. We arranged for more parking and had a hot dog and Coke mobile kitchen parked in our lot. Bob Clouser and Chris Helm tied each day in our two classrooms upstairs. The heated tent this year was much larger and could handle ten people tying flies. We also had people tying in two locations in the retail area of the store. We advertised the event in our newsletters throughout the year. Billed as a huge event with over thirty fly tyers, it became obvious to us that it would be well attended. And it was. It was much larger than our first one, once again a great success.

Below is a photo story of Fly Tyer’s Weekend 2005. Thanks to everyone who participated.

On Friday the tent crew showed up and built our new 2,000 square foot heated room for Fly Tyer’s Weekend. We didn’t need the heat all weekend.
Early Saturday morning everything was calm. I wonder if people will show up for the event? We hope so. We’ll just have to wait and see.
The tent is ready.
The A-Team prepares for the day. Anticipation is high. From left to right: Chris Montgomery, Clint Lensgraf, David Carson, Paula Begley, Daniel Drake and Annette Meador.
Bill Hey is ready. This is the second year that Bill has greeted and counted every person who attends Fly Tyer’s Weekend. Bill is a customer and friend from Huntsville, Alabama. His wife, Martha Montgomery is an artist. She painted the picture of our store that you see on almost everything we print.
Bob Clouser (left) and Byron Begley pal around before the event starts. They seem relieved as they see cars pulling into the parking lot.
Almost immediately after we opened, the parking lot filled up. That’s OK though. We could park another fifty or so cars across the street. Whew! People showed up!
People started pouring into the tent and our two classrooms upstairs to watch the fly tyers.
Jim Meador was our chef in the Weenie Wagon. Byron lost the photo of Jim cooking and serving so we substituted this one. Jim is at his best in a bush plane flying in to a secluded river in Alaska.
Mary K our friend worked in the Weenie Wagon serving up scrumptous chili dogs and other refreshments. Mary K is also an artist known as the “Fish Lady”. She paints, you guessed it, fish.
Paula and Clint in front of the Weenie Wagon. Paula is taking food to a fly tyer. Clint is taking food to his mouth.
