Scientific Anglers is one of the largest fly line manufacturers in the world, with a rich history of innovative designs and technology aimed at the sport of fly fishing.
Scientific Anglers (SA) was founded in 1945 by Leon Martuch, Clare Harris and Paul Rottiers in Midland, Michigan. They developed the first modern plastic-coated tapered fly lines, which replaced silk fly lines. Technology developed at SA. In 1959, they introduced the first microballoons, to greatly increase the floatation of fly lines.
In 1988, SA introduced silicone as a slickness agent, a technology that was soon used throughout the fly line industry. More new technologies followed, making SA one of the largest and most advanced manufacturers of fly fishing fly lines. We have been selling SA fly lines for over 20 years.
In 2013, Orvis purchased the company from 3M. Orvis operates SA separately and the company is still located in Midland, Michigan.
