For almost 20 years, we have been using and selling Orvis fly lines to anglers. We have seen Orvis and all manufacturers improve their line making technology. The progression leads to longer casting, more diversity for different conditions and species, and durability.
Orvis has always been on the top of the scale, pertaining to their advances in technology. One big step, was their recent acquisition of Scientific Anglers from the 3M Company. With that merger, another group of scientists and fly line designers joined Orvis. Though the two companies remain separate, they are also together.
Orvis invented and improved slickness. Slick lines slide through your rod guides without as much friction as lines made using older technology. This slickness is now called IS or Integrated Slickness. An additive to the PVC coating ensures less friction, and the additive will not wear off the line.
Orvis also prints vital information on the line, for your convenience. You can read at a glance, the line weight and taper on the line. That way, you won’t get your lines mixed up, thinking you are fishing with a 6 weight, when you are actually using a 5 weight. This is a great improvement.
When chosing a fly line, remember, price does matter. The less expensive fly lines feature older technology than the more pricy fly lines do. They perform better.
