These flies were chosen by Josh Pfeiffer, Dan Munger and me. Josh is a friend and professional smallmouth bass guide. Dan is another good friend, who I work with. He is an expert fly fisherman and warmwater fly fishing enthusiast. I have been fly fishing for smallmouth bass for many years, and love it. These are our favorites. They are also excellent flies for other warmwater fish. Some are even great trout flies. The Knucklehead is a good carp fly, at times.
We all love to use top water flies for smallmouth bass. And, they can be used in all the warm months, when the water temperature is about 60 degrees or warmer. They often do not work well in the bright sun, when the bass seek shade or deeper water. They do work in the bright sun on faster rivers. Typically though, we do best with top water flies on cloudy days, early or late, or on shaded banks. These flies are either poppers or foam floating flies.
We have some streamers in this category we really love. I’m partial to the black Wooly Bugger. The one here is tied on a bass stinger hook and weighted. I’m a huge fan of the Puglisi Threadfin Shad. Josh has had incredible results with the Murdich Minnow. It is on his top 5 favorite fly list.
You will find some flies that are probably best described as nymphs and crawfish imitations. We are building this selection carefully and slowly. You will see a few more flies here in the future.
