Mono, floats closer to the surface than fluorocarbon. It costs less money too.
Fluorocarbon has two specific advantages over mono. First, it is harder for the fish to see. That helps when you are fishing very clear water for spooky trout. More importantly, fluorocarbon offers better abrasion resistance. It is made using fibers instead of being extruded. If one fiber is nicked the small slice won’t expand or tear like mono. The disadvantage to fluorocarbon is the fact that it sinks faster.
Fluorocarbon leaders are extruded so some may not have the pound test strength of the same diameter of the tippet you buy on a spool. You may improve this situation by cutting off the tippet from a leader and tying on some spooled and stronger tippet using the same diameter tippet. Use a double surgeons knot.
