Blue Quill
The Blue Quill is a dry fly that is of utmost importance to anglers fishing during the early Spring. The Blue Quill represents a smaller mayfly that is similar to those represented by the Quill Gordon. These dark mayflies become active and mate when the water temperature reaches 50 degrees or more and is sustained for a few days.
This is one of the most exciting times of the year for fly fishermen suffering from cabin fever. Active Blue Quills can be found on streams along with Quill Gordons and Blue Wing Olives in the early Spring.
This emergence as with other aquatic insects cannot be predicted using a calendar. In the Smoky Mountains these insects can be found in abundance in late February or early March. However, they may be on the rivers as adults earlier or later, depending on the water temperature. You will find the adults present later in the high elevation streams or in Northern waters but earlier in Southern streams at lower elevations.
The Blue Quill or the species it mimics is a primary food source for trout in the early Spring. Best sizes are #16 through #20.
