Blue Wing Olive

The Blue Wing Olive dry fly is a staple in most freestone trout streams, spring creeks and tailwaters. This fly mimics many small mayflies grouped in the category, Blue Wing Olive or BWO. This fly pattern is used all over the United States, successfully and it is one of the best patterns to use during the Winter in the Smokies.

Blue Wing Olives love nasty weather. On wet or even snowy days, these tiny mayflies may be hatching, mating and laying eggs. For that reason, the BWO is one of the most important dry flies in your fly box. We sell many Blue Wing Olive patterns and this is just one of them. If you fly fish for trout with a dry fly in the Winter, you will most likely be using a Blue Wing Olive pattern.
