Elk Hair Caddis Black
The Elk Hair Caddis is a very effective fly pattern. They float extremely well, the angler can see them on the water and trout identify with the shape of the body as a caddis or stonefly.
In our region this fly is especially popular as a Winter Black Stonefly pattern in the smaller sizes. The Elk Hair Caddis in the black color is often used during the Winter in the Southern Appalachians to mimic that little stonefly.
Though this is not a major hatch in the Smokies, you will often see tiny black stoneflies on rocks near the stream. This is not a “Must Have” fly, but it does make you completely prepared during the Winter in the mountains.
