Adams Parachute
The Adams Parachute is commonly referred to as the “Parachute Adams”. You will hear this great fly described both ways. Since 1995, this fly has been one of our best selling dry flies, only matched recently by the Yellow Neversink Caddis. The Adams Parachute is one of the most useful dry flies you can have in your vest. We list it here as a pattern for all seasons, Winter, Spring Summer and Fall.
The Parachute Adams mimics many mayflies found in the Great Smoky Mountains and most Eastern freestone trout streams. It works well as a Blue Wing Olive in the smaller sizes, #16 down to #20. The Parachute Adams also resembles many other mayflies found in this region and in other parts of the Country in the larger sizes, #12 and #14. It is often used successfully during a Quill Gordon or Blue Quill hatch.
Due to the hackle being wound perpendicular to the water’s surface, this pattern, like all “Parachute” flies rides lower in the water’s surface. The body is more easily seen by trout. Additionally, the white post makes it easier for the fly fisherman to see the fly on the water. Seeing is catching. You are much more likely to catch trout on a fly you can see.
This fly is one you should never be without on freestone trout streams. You should have them in sizes #12 to #18 and that will cover many aquatic insects you are likely to find on the streams.
