Thunderhead
The Thunderhead is a dry fly that most local fly fishermen say originated in Bryson City, North Carolina. This fly was designed as a Smoky Mountains Pattern according to lore. The truth is, this is a very productive fly for the Southern Appalachians.
The Thunderhead resembles many dark mayflies found in the Eastern United States. The Wulff style wing makes this fly easier to see by anglers, thus improving their fishing success rate. Similar in color to an Adams, without the grizzly hackle and wings, you will find this fly in the vests of many local anglers in and around the Smoky Mountains.
The Thunderhead is seeping in tradition, like a dry fly version of a Tellico Nymph or a Yellowhammer. In keeping with that tradition while fishing a very effective fly, a Thunderhead should be part of your collection of Smokies flies.
