Shrimp/Scud - Olive
Scuds are very effective patterns in tailwaters and spring creeks and lakes. These aquatic insects are light sensitive so scud patterns are best fished on overcast days or in the waining hours of light.
Scuds vary in color due to the food they eat. Being basically translucent the animal is going to take on the hue of what ever is in its digestive track. Also, scud eggs are orange and carried by the females until the young hatch, making the orange patterns very effective during their breeding season (generally water temps in the mid sixties). Scuds also turn orange when they have died.
Unlike nymphs, scuds do not go through differently shaped stages of life and have no terrestrial form. Young scuds are born looking like adults just very small and then grow in size as they age. Having a variety of sizes of scuds is a good idea to be able to match the age class that the trout are feeding on.
