H & L Variant

The H & L Variant is an excellent attractor pattern, especially for brook trout in the Smokies and other species elsewhere. It is thought that this pattern originated in Montana or Idaho.

Important components of the H & L Variant are the white wings and tail. The fly is easily seen by the angler. This fly was President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s favorite. It can easily become your favorite too, expecially if you like fishing forested brook trout streams in the mountains where visibility is so important to your success.
