Tequeely
You probably think we are kidding. This must be a joke. The Tequeely is a cross between a Wooly Bugger and a Girdle Bug. The Tequeely has a copper bead and the body is made from a copper colored metallic tinsel that we can’t find anywhere. The rubber legs are yellow and tied in a perfect straight line. The tail is a mixture of yellow and black marabou. This is not a joke.
Brent called me one day and asked if we sold a Tequeely. I had never heard of that fly. He said it is an Orvis pattern. He went on to tell me that he and one of his friends were floating the Little Pigeon River, fly fishing for smallmouth bass. They were not catching anything. But, they saw another boat and those fly fishers were catching smallmouth bass. One thing led to another. Brent and his buddy traded some beer for two Tequeely flies. They started catching smallmouth bass. The rest is history. Well, not quite.
I bought some Tequeely flies to sell in the shop from Orvis and bought two for myself, just in case. Josh and I were floating one of the tailwaters a few weeks later having terrible luck. We could not buy a smallie. I thought, “What the heck” and tied one on. Almost immediately I started catching smallmouth bass. Josh tied one on and did the same thing.
I do not know if they work in lakes. I haven’t tried that. Maybe they only catch smallies when nothing else will. I do know this, we sell a lot of them. I would not be on a river without Tequeely flies in the boat or in my box. They are certainly good at saving the day. That is why they are on this page. I’m not putting anything on here unless I know it works. Byron Begley
