Murdich Minnow
When avid and seasoned smallmouth bass fishermen get together to talk about flies, the Murdich Minnow comes up often and it has for several years. I kept hearing about it from an angler in Virginia who told me it was one of his top flies for smallmouth bass.
This fly is 5 inches long and tied on a 1/0 saltwater hook. Chartreuse and Grey are the favorite colors according to anglers I’ve talked to. The Murdich Minnow features plenty of flash, synthetic body hair and a Estaz or Pearl Chenille head. This fly was designed by Bill Murdich. It is an excellent representation of a baitfish and they move like a baitfish as they swim through the water. I could see that this might be the perfect baitfish pattern except in very clear water. Flashy flies do not work as well for smallies in crystal clear water. But, for most conditions anglers find in their rivers, this could be “the” fly.
The angler from Virginia visited Townsend and he showed me his flies. Sure enough Bill Murdich’s Minnow was well represented in his fly boxes. This fellow was going fishing with Josh the next day. Josh is one of the most avid fly fishing guides in our area and he’s good at it. Well, when these guys got back, all Josh could talk about is the Murdich Minnow. It worked. It was a huge success for them on the tailwater they fished. They had a great day of fishing and landing large smallies up to 5 pounds. Josh started tying new versions of the Murdich Minnow in varying sizes and colors. The man from Virginia made a believer out of Josh and me. He knew what he was talking about.
The Murdich Minnow is also a great fly for all warmwater gamefish, including stripers and largemouth bass. The fly was actually designed for stripers. You could also do well with this fly for many saltwater species including redfish and speckled trout. So, we have them available here in two colors, Grey/White and Chartreuse/White. Enjoy!
