Mr. Rapidan
The Mr. Rapidan was designed by Harry Murray of Virginia years ago. Mr. Rapidan was named for the Rapidan River which flows through North Central Virginia and was listed in Trout Unlimited’s 110 Best Trout Streams. It ranked #38.
The Mr. Rapidan dry fly is highly regarded as an excellent attractor pattern in the Southern Appalachians, especially for brook trout. The yellow Wulff style wings tied on a mayfly body renders the fly very visible to anglers, obviously one reason for it’s popularity.
Mr. Rapidan is a very productive fly in the Great Smoky Mountains. Visibility is an issue in the Smokies due to the thick canopy of maturing trees casting shadows on the streams. Many popular Smoky Mountain dry fly patterns have some contrasting color so they can be seen. In this case, the color is the yellow wings which show up well on dimly lit brookie streams in the upper elevations of the Park.
Most Smoky Mountain anglers know yellow is an attractor for rainbows and brook trout, giving the Mr. Rapidan one more advantage.
We offer these flies in three sizes, #14, #16 and #18. They are tied for us by Holly Flies of Mount Holly Springs, Pennsylvania.
