Puglisi Perfect Threadfin Shad #2
If you fish for trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass or any gamefish in a lake or tailwater in the Southeast United States, you should have one of these flies. The Puglisi Perfect Threadfin Shad #2 is an excellent and realistic version of this forage fish, so sought after by gamefish. We offer these flies in three sizes and this one is the medium or 3” long. You may find, as I have that the threadfin shad, if present in your waters is one of the most important food sources for trout, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass.
These flies are tied using Enrico Puglisi EP Fibers. These flies are actually tied by and bought from the Enrico Puglisi Flies. We buy the flies then add the small black dot behind the eye and color the tail with a chartreuse marker.
I have used this pattern successfully for years and caught some big smallies, brown and rainbow trout on them. When fishing for smallmouth bass in the lakes in Tennessee, I always have one of these patterns rigged up and ready to go on a rod in our boat. I have even caught some big carp on this pattern. Everything that swims eats this baitfish. Paula and I were fishing on Dale Hollow Lake a few years ago and I was fishing with a Puglisi Threadfin Shad on a sink tip fly line. I felt a large fish take the fly and I immediately set the hook. After a long fight in deep water, thinking I probably had a line class world record smallmouth bass hooked up, I boated a 8 pound flathead catfish. You just never know what is going to take this fly.
The Puglisi Perfect Threadfin Shad #2 is fairly heavy. You will do best using a 7 Wt. or 8 Wt. fly rod. If you prefer a lighter fly rod, choose the micro version of this fly. I’m dead serious, I would not go fishing where threadfin shad are present without this fly.
