:: Hatches & Fly Patterns of the Great Smoky Mountains by Don Kirk
Hatches & Fly Patterns of the Great Smoky Mountains by Don Kirk
Hatches & Fly Patterns of the Great Smoky Mountains
By Don Kirk
Once in a while, a new book is written about fly fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains. This book is new and different as it delves into the flies and insects, not the streams and the fish. My friends Roger Lowe and Kevin Howell have written very good books about insects, flies and patterns. They are also experts, who are written about in Donís new book.
We canít seem to get enough information about fly patterns in the Smokies. We love to read about the history of the flies and those who made history by creating the fly patterns. Hatches & Fly Patterns of the Great Smoky Mountains, goes into great detail, with excellent photography and creative writing. Don Kirk obviously did his homework when researching his subject and he did it well.
When I open this book, I see words and photographs of good friends of mine, here and departed. These people are the true masters of the sport. People like Eddy George, Walter Babb, Kevin Howell, Roger Lowe, L.J. DeCuir, Ray Ball, Anthony Hipps, Rex Wilson, Steve Yates, Tyler Legg, Jeff Wilkins and David Perry are all friends of mine. Eddy and L.J. passed away sadly, several years ago. But, they were my friends. There are others, who I did not have the chance to meet. I regret that but I can read about them in this book.
Don goes into great detail about the aquatic insects we tie flies to depict and he does it well in this book.
Then, a large portion of the book contains photographs and content about the fly patterns, those that have proven over time to work well in the Smokies.
I believe you will really enjoy this book and it will certainly expand your knowledge of the subject we all love, fly fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains.
