Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina
Welcome to the Fishing Report from the Great Smoky Mountains. The sky is clear and the temperature is 17 degrees at 7:30 am. We got a little snow, less than an inch. The main roads are fine. The back roads are covered with a light layer of snow but I didn’t have any trouble getting here. I saw three vehicles on the roads early this morning.
Most of the roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are closed as of the latest information given by the Park 15 hours ago. I doubt if anything has changed. The high temperature today should be in the mid 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 470 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.66 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 320 cfs. The water temperature is a bone chilling 38 degrees. We are going to see that number drop early next week. Low temperatures in the low single digits are expected Monday and Tuesday night.
This is not a good time to go fishing in the Smokies. You can’t drive anywhere. The water is very cold. If you walked in and fell in you would be in serious trouble. My advice is to stay at home today or go to work. It is going to warm up this weekend. We should have highs in the 40’s Saturday and Sunday. Then, snow is expected Sunday night followed by frigid air.
One bright spot this weekend will be our Super Saturday Event. John Thurman and Josh Pfeiffer will be tying at the shop. They will begin at 10 am and tie until 2 pm. It’s free, just show up. You can see our January events schedule by CLICKING HERE. Also, you can register to win a $100 LRO gift card. I think we’ll have a big crowd Saturday. The roads will be fine and people will be out.
Daniel called and is running late. So I better get out there and spread ice melt on the parking lot.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
