Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee.  Right now it is cloudy but I can see many of the mountains in Great Smoky Mountains National Park from my window.  It is quiet in town, of course.  It will be that way for a while.  Glenn who is the city maintenance department man on the job is taking down the Christmas lights.  The City has a truck with a cherry picker mounted on the bed.  We talked for a few minutes then I helped him take a light down.  My feet were firmly planted on the ground.  He was in the box high in the air.

Little River looked good.  I stopped to take the water temperature.  It was 40 degrees.  Flow is 287 cubic feet per second.  Median flow for this date is 314 cfs.  A cold front is moving in and we will get some snow again tonight.  I’m ready this time.  There are two 40 pound containers of ice melt in my truck.  I plan to treat the “ramp of death” that goes from the end of our private road to Old Cades Cove Road.

Fishing has been fair around our region.  Ethan, Will and Ben floated the South Holston Tuesday.  They caught a few trout.  Some other friends of mine are fishing there today.  There have been some decent catches reported in the Smokies over the past 10 days.  A few large browns have been caught.  If you go, use nymphs and streamer fished deep and don’t fall in.

Yesterday several of us did a lot of Troutfest work.  Neil and Ethan started making sales calls to sell ads in the Troutfest Journal magazine.  Sarah Weeks and I designed most of the Troutfest printing and uploaded it to Hart Graphic’s FTP site.  The banquet tickets were in that project.  They should be ready to sell in a few days.  You will be able to buy them online.

The printing had to be changed quite a bit this year.  Small posters with cards to give away will be sent to fly shops and big stores with fly fishing departments in several states.  The posters will be mounted in plastic displays that are the proper size for checkout counters.  A business card holder will be placed next to the small poster.  Cards driving people to the Troutfest website.  We are printing 20,000 small cards, just like las year.  We will distribute 100 of these packages.

A post card will be mailed to 2,500 of our store’s customers in east Tennessee.  The new cards are similar to last year’s but we have added two more headliner’s photos to the former group of Bob Clouser, Joe Humphreys and Lefty Kreh.  The new headliners are Zach Matthews and Tom Rosenbauer.  Getting all five photos on the post card gave Sarah and I some problems but we worked it out.

Joe Rentz has designed a Facebook page for Troutfest.  At our Troutfest Committee meeting on Sunday, Joe asked that we all use our Facebook pages to introduce the new Troutfest page to our friends.  I have a Facebook page but I don’t know how to use it.

Sarah is on the Troutfest Committee and she is the Director of Development for Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Someone at her organization send out a notice or whatever you call it to their “Friends” friends.  Whatever that is went out to 7,000 people.  Friends of the Smokies has partnered with Troutfest in several important areas.  Our Troutfest Committee is loaded with talent.  Many are professionals, doing for Troutfest what they do for a living.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
