Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee.  The temperature this morning is 23 degrees.  Most of the snow in the valley is gone.  But, in Great Smoky Mountains National Park the ground is still white.  The mountains I can see from our house, part of the chain that surrounds Cades Cove are covered with a light blanket of snow.  The roads are fine here.

Little River is about perfect except for the cold water.  This morning the temperature is 36 degrees.  Flow is 247 cubic feet per second. Median flow for this date is 293 cfs.  The water is extremely clear.  Fishing will be slow but you can catch some trout if you get your fly right in front of their face.  They are hunkered down on the bottom, waiting for Spring which may not be so far away.

Anglers are getting prepared already this year.  We can smell Spring in the air.  You never know how long Winter will last but we all hope it won’t last long.  I’m tying flies like crazy.

Spring will also bring our big event to Townsend, Troutfest.  The planning and hard work is kicked into high gear.  Two of the best decisions we have made over the past three years is assembling a committee of talented people and adding a volunteer coordination group.  They are husband and wife, Ron and Terry Becker.  Together they organize the volunteers.  This year’s event will require over 170 volunteers including the fly tyers.

Ron searched the internet to find software designed specifically for signup and tracking volunteers.  He found one website that handles the whole process and it was free.  He did make a donation to them on behalf of Troutfest.  Yesterday he came over and we hooked everything up to the Troutfest Website.  It works.

If you would like to be part of this great event you can signup online.  The minimum volunteer shift is four hours.  So, you can work your shift, get a fee t-shirt then enjoy the Exposition or Banquet.

Here’s how it works.  Go to the ad below and click.  That will take you to the Troutfest Website volunteer page.  Read the instructions.  Basically you click the red and white button to the left which takes you to the volunteer signup. Enter your e-mail address and send it to the volunteer server.  In a minute or two you will get an e-mail.  From there you can click to the area where you enter your name, phone number and t-shirt size.  You can pick which day you want to work, the time you want to start and what you want to do.  As the time slots fill up you will see what is available.  You can e-mail Ron with any questions you have.  Give it a try and don’t wait too long.  Last year we didn’t have any trouble getting people to sign up and this year it is much easier.

Jack Gregory is tying at the shop today between 10:00 and 2:00.  You should be here for that.  Walter Babb is teaching a Advanced Fly Tying Class today.  He has four students.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
