Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee. The is a thick layer of frost and snow coating the mountains. Unfortunately as of 10am this morning that snow and ice is also on most of the roadways in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. US 441/Newfound Gap Road, Little River Road, Upper Tremont Road, Laurel Creek Road, Cades Cove Loop Road and the Wears Cove Entrance Road are all closed due to snow and ice. Once again, the phone number to call to check on road closures is 865-436-1200 then 2 and 2 again.

Water temps are cold. It was 38F when I dipped the thermometer this morning. Water levels are on the slightly high side but still fishable. Nymphs will still be the best bet going. Don't skimp on the weight either. You will need to get the flies down to the trout.

Saturday looks like it will be a good day to head to Townsend. The Boyds, aka the Dubbing Teasers, will be here at the shop giving a FREE fly tying demonstration from 10am till 2pm. They are always a fun pair to see and they are both excellent tyers with some great new ideas. After spending some time learning about fly tying the water should be warmed enough to make for some decent winter-time fishing in the late afternoon. According to the one weather source I looked at it is supposed to be 51F and sunny. I can't really trust one source of weather forecast....but I liked what that one had to say so I didn't want to go looking for others and maybe find some calling for 30 and snow. Just trying to keep the hope alive.

The days are getting longer. In less than a week it will be February. If we actually got some sustained period of warm weather it won't be too many more weeks before the Spring hatches begin. What can be better than seeing those first Quill Gordons flopping around on the water. I prefer dry flies so I can't wait until the hatches start and I can cast out a huge #10 bug. Don't forget about the Quill Gordon Wet Fly pattern. Quill Gordons hatch beneath the surface and then emerge as adults. This makes the adults swimming up through the water very vulnerable to being eaten.

Spring is coming. That means TroutFest will be just around the corner too. Many new updates are being made to the official website TroutFest also has an official Facebook page CLICK HERE now too where you can receive updates on how everything is going.

Time to get back to working on Spring orders and the Online Catalog . Hopefully our lower inventory on the tackle side of the store hasn't caused too many hardships. We are trying to get the inventory down to a minimal level to make room and to build some cash for the large Spring orders we have coming in at the beginning of March. If we are out of something that you need we'll do our best to special order it in for you. Just let me know.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
