Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park
January 30, 2010

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains.  It is quiet in town this morning.  The IGA is not open.  It’s as if the devastating winter storm actually happened.  It didn’t.  We got a little snow and ice late yesterday and I decided to close the store 15 minutes early so Daniel and Bill would not have to drive in the dark.  We had about an inch of snow on the ground.  The Weather Service was predicting 6” to 9” of snow when I went to bed last night.  I woke up at 4:00 a.m. and it was raining.  Raining?  That’s what it did all night, it rained.  The roads are fine here and in Maryville.

Doug McFalls at Mount Leconte reported 8” of snow on the ground and a layer of ice on everything.  The low temperature up there was 22 degrees last night.

We are all here, there are four of us working today.

Fishing in the Park will be hard to do.  Most of the roads there are closed.  Highway 441 between Gatlinburg and Cherokee, Little River Road, Laurel Road to Cades Cove and upper Tremont roads are closed.  I guess that leaves the Middle Prong of Little River.  It might be a good day to fish for larger trout using streamers.

The water temperature in town is 39 degrees.  The flow is up some from yesterday at 658 cubic feet per second (cfs).  Normal for this date is 290 cfs.  There is plenty of water and it is cold.  Don’t fall in!

Friends of the Smokies Evergreen Ball was postponed until the second weekend in February.  It was supposed to be tonight.  Check the Friends website for details.  They were expecting a snow storm too, like everyone else.

Today is January 30th, one day closer to Spring than it was yesterday.

Have a good one and thank you for being here with us.
