Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report. It is cold and frosty out this morning. As much as I would prefer warm Spring weather, I am glad that it isn't like last year when the mayflies were already beginning to hatch at this same time. This year has already started oddly enough. We have had one of the wettest Januarys on record. Just since January 1, 12.76 inches of rain have been recorded at the Knoxville Airport. 18.94 inches have been recorded since December 1. That is a lot of water. My hope is that the rain fall will be more spread out and it won't be like last year when we got large amounts of rain, then had long dry periods.

As of 10:00 am several roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are closed. US 441/Newfound Gap Road, Greenbriar, Cosby, Cataloochee, and both parts of the Foothills Parkway are closed temporarily due to ice and snow. To get the most up-to-date road info you can give the Park a call at 865-436-1200 then hit 2 and hit 2 again. You can also get road information on Twitter at

A few hardy anglers stopped in yesterday on the way to the mountains. We didn't hear any reports from people who had been out. Water levels are looking much better. The Little River is down to 2.68 feet or 465 c.f.s. This is just a little higher than the median for today of 347 c.f.s.
Water temperatures are still cold. Last nights cold weather caused the temps to drop below 40 again to 39.8F. Warm weather, forecast for the rest of the week, should cause water temperatures to rise great improving the fishing.

There isn't much point getting out at the crack of dawn unless you enjoy breaking ice out of your rod guides. Nymph patterns such as Prince Nymphs, Copper Johns, Tellico Nymphs etc, with some split shot added, will be your best bet. Later in the afternoon if it begins you warm you might try a BWO or a dark colored caddis.

A few of you have been waiting for the Tan colored Brookie Hats we sell. see here.. The computer we used to check email with has decided to no longer start so I can't access the emails stored on it. If you were wanting one you can order online or give a call.

John Thurman and Tim Doyle are going to be here next Saturday for another Free Fly Tying Demo. They will be tying from 10 am till 2 pm. Stop by and check them out.

Thank you for reading the fishing report and thank you for being here with us.
