Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina
Welcome to the Fishing Report from the Great Smoky Mountains. We are back open for business this morning. The main roads from Maryville are clear though there was a few slick spots on 321 in the corners between Walland and Townsend. Our parking lot is snowy and slick. We spread ice melt out there this morning so it should start to clear up quickly.
The weather forecast is calling for highs in the upper 40's today. That should really start to melt all the snow. Tomorrow is going to be cold, a high of 37. After that we are looking at a nice warm up.
At 9:30 am this morning Little River Road, Cades Cove Loop Road, Upper Tremont Road, US 441/Newfound Gap Road, and the Wear Cove Entrance road are all closed. You can get up Laurel Creek Road to the Cades Cove Campground and you can drive up Tremont Road to the Institute. This will give some fishing opportunities if you want to brave the cold.
Water levels in the Little River system are right at normal. The gauge reading this morning is 2.11 feet or 299 c.f.s. The average flow for this date is 300 c.f.s. It is nice for things to be "normal" again.
Fishing in the Smokies is going to be tough. Water levels are great but temperatures are still very cold. Look for sunny spots where the water has a chance to warm a little. Nymph patterns such as Prince Nymphs, Pheasant Tails, Copper Johns, etc will be the best bet. Add some split shot to get them down.
Tomorrow is going to be cold, fishing will be tough. It is the perfect time to stop by the Shop and meet David Perry and learn some new fly tying techniques. David will be tying from 10 am till 2 pm. It is FREE.
We still have openings in our beginner fly tying class on Saturday February 22nd. CLICK HERE to read more about it. Call the shop at 865-448-9459 to enroll. The cost is $85 and we furnish everything, including lunch. The class will be taught by Walter Babb and Brian Courtney.
I thought I was going to get out of having to check in the box of Wapsi. Since noone was here yesterday it is still sitting there waiting for me. I better get downstairs and work on it so the materials can be on the wall for tomorrow. Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
