Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and East Tennnessee.

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee.  It is sunny and 52 degrees this morning.  It is windy too.  Most of the snow melted off the mountains that I can see from here.  I talked to Kathy last night at a business meeting.  She owns Grace Hill Bed and Breakfast which is supposed to be the highest elevation home in our County.  I could see her roof was cover with snow yesterday morning.  She said she only had two inches of the white stuff and it did not stick to her steep winding road.  It was pretty while it lasted.

Little River is flowing at 319 cubic feet per second (cfs).  Median flow for this date is 342 cfs.  The water temperature was a cold 41 degrees in town.  How can it be so warm and the water temperature drop so much?  Snow melt I guess.

The rivers are going to warm up now.  The high today will be around 57 degrees, with 63 tomorrow and a extremely warm 70 to 72 degrees on Thursday.  Get ready for some good fishing again.  Unless something weird happens, we’ll have warm, Spring-like weather through March 1st with one cold night thrown in.  That will be Friday night, at 28 degrees.

You are going to find Quill Gordons, Blue Quills and Brown Stoneflies hatching.  Trout have figured out they bugs are on the water.  Bill said he caught over 30 trout one day on Little River last week.  He and Sheila went back the next day and the fishing was great again.  He said bugs were all over the water.  They were thick.  All reports indicate excellent fishing.  Use Quill Gordon imitations or a large Parachute Adams.  The trout will probably take nymphs too, especially today with the colder water.  The water will warm up soon. I would use a Quill Gordon wet fly.

I’m going to hustle up some Spring orders today.  We need to stock up on the essentials.  Daniel is doing the same thing.  We’ll be ready for the surge in a week.  That could be early, traveling anglers are careful about being here too soon.  After all, we had a hard freeze for several days in early April not long ago.  The fishing shut down temporarily.

I read a story about Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton this morning in The New York Times.  He is the most famous moonshiner in the Country, no disputing that.  And one of our customers was mentioned in the article.  Popcorn took his own life in 2009, the day he was supposed to report to prison.  Before that he appeared on the History Channel and in other publications.  Popcorn was well liked here and his home Cocke County.

Legal moonshine distilleries are going to be opening all around here.  One has already opened in Gatlinburg.

I worked yesterday on this one website page for hours.  The photography was a pain.  The subject is the Orvis Mirage Large Arbor Big Game Reel.  The gold one gave me the problems.  The problem was glare.  The flash units each have soft boxes about three feet across.  I have three of them in the studio.  They are supposed to eliminate the glare.  You can see I had problems and settled with the best I could do.

Today I’m shooting a silver colored Orvis Hydros reel.  That is one of my favorite reels.  I like the price for one thing.  They are buttery smooth.  The drag is more than I need for smallmouth bass fishing.

I hope to have this website complete by May.  Then the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) work will begin.  I’m doing a lot of that now as I write content, titles and keywords.

One thing I will buy when the Spring Fishpond order comes in is a Cloudburst Gear Bag.  This will become my new boat bag.  I never noticed all the features until Jack’s wife bought him one for Christmas.  She asked my opinion, I looked it over good, and told her he would like it.  I liked it too.

From the photos you can’t see the features.  When I get mine I will load it up, put it in the boat, go fishing and take lots of pictures of it.  They will end up on our Online Store.  To me, the most compelling feature is the gunnel hooks.  This bag hooks to the boat’s gunnel and is right there beside you ready for action.  No more bending over to search for flies or tools.  Maybe Fishpond should make a small cooler with gunnel hooks.

I will be watching the markets today.  The EU worked out a deal with Greece to bail them out of financial trouble.  Investors will like that.  I bet the Dow goes over 13000 early today.  We need to keep an eye on crude prices.  Iran is threatening a embargo against some Countries.  It should be an interesting day in New York.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
