Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report.  The sky is clear and it is 47 degrees in Townsend this morning at 8:05 am.  Hey, it is shirt sleeve weather this morning.

Little River is flowing at 2.76 feet on the gauge or 531 cubic feet per second (cfs).  Median flow for this date is 345 cfs.  The water temperature is 49.3 degrees at the “Y”.  The water is clear.

Anglers had a slow day yesterday in the Smokies.  Two of the best fly fishermen I know, Jack and Walter only caught 9 trout between them.  That is a terrible day for those guys. Walter said he didn’t work to hard at it.  Josh and his client caught a few.  I talked to all 4 of them at 6:00 pm when we closed so they stayed on the water fairly late.

Fishermen who came back early reported slow fishing.  When the water is cold in the mornings, the fishing is better late in the day after the water has warmed.  Walter took the temperature at Metcalf Bottoms or near there yesterday afternoon.  He said it was 47 degrees up there.  The water temperature at the “Y” peaked at 52 degrees yesterday, conclusive evidence that the water is colder at the higher elevations.  We all knew that.

Walter said the Quill Gordons and March Browns were hatching at the same time.  He remarked that is the first time he has ever seen that.  Walter has been fishing these streams for over 55 years.  They don’t come any better.  He knows what he’s talking about.

I’m going out on a limb here.  I think the fishing will be good today.  If I am wrong, I am sorry.

First, the water is a little lower than it was yesterday morning at 2.76 feet and it is falling.  I think, by tonight it will be 2.5 feet on the gauge if my interpretation of the trajectory on the graph is correct.

Second, the water temperature is starting the day at 49.3 degrees.  Yesterday it started at 45.8 degrees at the “Y”.

And third… I don’t have a third.  The only negative is wind today.  The Weather Channel website indicates a wind speed of 13 miles per hour.

The Fishing Gauge is pointing to “Good” and that is what I think we’ll see today, especially if you fish later this afternoon.  I know, Duck Dynasty comes on at 7:00 pm tonight.  Gotta be home for that. Fish as late as you can.

The rest of the week looks awesome for fishing in the Smokies. It is going to be very warm, day and night.  There is a chance for rain Thursday and a greater chance on Friday.  I would not let that discourage me.  I would be here this week if you can.

Be ready with Blue Quills, Quill Gordons, March Browns, brown stonefly imitations, and nymphs if they don’t work.

I’m not a big basketball fan but I did watch the Louisville/Wichita State game last night and it was a nail biter no matter who you were pulling for.  They are two excellent teams.  Louisville was down 12 points in the second half but came back to win.  What a game.  What talent on both teams.  I will definitely watch the finals Monday night.

After the game, a live concert was featured in Atlanta.  The band was Muse.  I had never heard of them.  Those guys are talented.  I have not been interested in a new band in years.  Muse is now officially on my list.

I guess you can tell I watched TV last night which is practically unheard of.

Man, get out there and fish.  It is time.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
