Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina
Welcome to the Fishing Report. It is an absolutely gorgeous morning here in Townsend. The red buds are in full bloom along the roads. I really like to see them blooming, it is too bad they last for such a short period of time.
Our first Beginner Fly Fishing School of the season is this morning. Everyone was here early and so far everything is running smooth. The only question hanging on is if the water is going to be too high for the Onstream Class tomorrow. We have to cancel the class if the water is higher than 2.50 feet on the gauge. When the water is above that level wading gets more dangerous than it normally is.
Water levels are better this morning than they were yesterday. The gauge was reading 2.84 feet or 575 c.f.s. The normal flow for today is 297 c.f.s. The biggest change from yesterday morning is the water temperature. Yesterday it was in the upper 50's. The temperature dropped all day yesterday and this morning it was only a little over 50F. This drop in water temp will do more to mess with the fishing today than water levels. Fishing in the afternoon and evening will be much better.
If you head out this morning start with nymphs. The cooler temps will likely have the trout down. Add some split shot. Prince nymphs, Copper Johns, Tellico nymphs are always good choices. Soft hackles and wet flies can be great choices this time a year also. Sizes will range from #12-#16.
As the day warms you might switch to dries or a dry/dropper combo. March Browns in #10-#12 have been doing well. Darker colored Elk Hair Caddis in a #14-#16 should be good too. Don't forget the old standbys like Parachute Adams.
Today is the Tennessee Casting For Recovery retreat over by Gatlinburg. They have a beautiful weekend for it.
Byron called yesterday. Bill could hardly hear him on the phone. He must have been on Telephone Rock.....the only spot on the farm that gets cell service. We told him that everything here was going smooth. He'll be back doing the Fishing Report on Monday.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
